ITP is a non-profit organization that assists its members in developing the best talent and inspiring the next generation, and regularly recruits for apprentices in this specialized digital industry all across the country.

Choose your telecommunication apprenticeship programme.

• Telecoms Field Operative: Level 2 apprenticeship programme.

  • The role of a Telecoms Field Operative (TFO) is to build, provide, or repair telecom services for commercial or residential customers on the UK’s National Telecom Access Network. They also work on copper and fibre connections for 4G and 5G services from the local telephone exchanges. These connections deliver telephone, internet, data and TV services to households and businesses. TFOs interact with a variety of customers and communication providers, and will find themselves working at height, in underground networks, at a residence or at a business. No two days will likely be the same as telecom service is required almost everywhere and it’s a Telecoms Field Operative’s job to be there on site.

• Information Communications Technician: Level 3 apprenticeship programme.

  • An Information Communications Technician (ICT) provides both internal and external support through tools or systems to solve problems and trouble-shoot issues, resolving routine and complex matters. As an ICT you may wear many hats, all with the aim to support business critical requirements and focus on customer solutions. Day to day, an ICT will interact with both employees and customers, either digitally or in person. With more and more organisations relying on computers and communications in their operations, a skilled Information Communications Technician can be an invaluable asset to a company. 

• Network Cable Installer: Level 3 apprenticeship programme.

  • A Network Cable Installer (NCI) installs, terminates, tests, and certifies network cable infrastructure elements according to national and international industry standards. They will also work to ensure good physical and cyber security across in a variety of settings — from installing cables within buildings and structures to external installation between buildings, cities, and even countries.

It’s an exciting opportunity and a telecommunication apprenticeship will enable you to combine on the job training with academic study to gain highly sought-after skills and experience and get paid to do so.

Why’s the telecommunication industry a good choice?

Telecommunication is a branch of technology that enables communication through cable, broadcasting, telephone, and telegraph. The telecom industry is thriving in this country, luckily going largely unaffected by the coronavirus pandemic in recent years, and rather than scaling back operations, many companies are investing billions of pounds into maintaining and building up the sector in order to connect as many homes and businesses as possible. In fact, many experts expect the industry to keep growing as more and more people are working from home and require secure and fast access to the internet to perform their duties, with an expected average 3.87% revenue growth over the next few years.

Over the last decade, total revenue in the telecommunications industry has surpassed £30 billion each year. Thanks to a national imperative to grant access to 5G to the majority of the population by 2027, 15 million more premises needing connectivity to full fibre by 2025, and a whopping 87% of IT and telecoms workers wanting to be upskilled, the demand for skilled and qualified talent is at an all-time high. Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be enough qualified workers to meet that demand. This means that there are many opportunities to be found within the sector and a telecoms apprenticeship is a great way to get your foot in the door.
