What is Kickstart?

The Kickstart Scheme gives funding to create new job placements for 16 to 24 year olds who are also on Universal Credit who are at risk of long term unemployment. Additionally, employers of all sizes can apply for funding which covers:

  • 100% of the National Minimum Wage (or the National Living Wage depending on the age of the participant) for 25 hours per week for a total of 6 months.
  • Associated employer National Insurance contributions.
  • Employer minimum automatic enrolment contributions.

Moreover, employers can spread the start date of the job placements up until the end of December 2021.

Changes to the Kickstart scheme

You no longer need a minimum of 30 job placements to apply directly for a grant.

You can now apply for a Kickstart Scheme grant by either:

  • applying online yourself
  • applying through a Kickstart gateway who is already working with the Kickstart Scheme

We provide courses to help aid and allow young people that chance at long term employment. This is because we believe in our mission to help everyone reach their full potential.

Kickstart Vacancies

Kickstart Scheme jobs are normally 25 hours per week and pay at least the National Minimum Wage or National Living Wage depending on how old you are. Not only will you be in a paid 6-month job, you will also be receiving additional employability support to help boost your employment prospects in the future. You may be able to move from a Kickstart job into an apprenticeship within the same company.

Is it right for my business?

The scheme is open to businesses of all sizes and across all sectors – anyone can apply. 

The CBI recognises that this is an incredibly challenging time for many employers. While some may not be in a position to host young people in additional roles right now, others may benefit from increasing their headcounts over the next few months. This could be to meet increased business demand in some areas, or to contribute to wider priorities around diversity and inclusion, or social mobility, within their organisations.
